A GOOD sing-along was held to mark the 101st birthday of Florence Fenner at Elizabeth House, Moors Walk, WGC.

Entertainer James Lebec provided the music and sing-along and everyone also enjoyed sherry and birthday cake and had balloons to help Florence celebrate on Monday last week.

Assistant manager Paul Spraggs said: "Everyone sang Happy Birthday to her and Florence very much enjoyed herself and does like her music."

Florence was born the eldest of three brothers and two sisters, in Kent and lived there for 20 years.

In 1926 she married Harry, who was a radio operator, and the couple moved to Egypt for a year in 1928.

Later on the couple lived in Finchley, London, before moving to Roe Green Lane in Hatfield where Harry worked for de Havilland Aircraft and Florence worked as a library assistant at Hatfield Library, before retiring in 1974.

Florence has lived at Elizabeth House since 1997.

A102-YEAR-OLD drank sherry with friends and celebrated her birthday in style.

A birthday bash was thrown for Florence Fenner by carers at her Elizabeth House care home in WGC.

The Moors Walk resident tapped her feet to her favourite music as she munched on a buffet and birthday cake.

Florence's daughter-in-law, Rita Fenner, said: "An entertainer played the organ and everyone was singing. There were lots of little old ladies, including my mother-in-law, swigging sherry."

Other party guests included her grandson, Nicholas Fenner, 53, great grandson, Callum, 16, friends and residents of the care home.

Florence, born in Chatham in April 1904, moved to Hatfield in 1961.

A wife and mother first and foremost, she also worked as a proof reader for local newspapers and as a library assistant at Hatfield library.

During the war she travelled all over England with her husband, who tested propellers for Imperial Airways, and even went as far as Egypt to be with him.

Florence, the eldest of six, has lived in the care home since she was 94 and, according to Rita, is looking forward to having her picture in the paper again for her 103rd birthday!
